The Nymphomaniac - A Psycho-Mythology Series
SMALL GEMS BY J. MARVIN SPIEGELMAN, Ph.D.

The origin of the Nymphomaniac story is in The Tree by J. Marvin Spiegelman. His “Psycho-Mythology” grew out of many years of use of C. G. Jung’s method of “Active Imagination.” The three tales of the women are more personal in one sense–they all have names–but are also archetypal. They are meant to be quite characteristic of women, but also come from the stages of development of the anima (the image of the feminine in the male psyche), as described by Jung. Julia, the Atheist-Communist, is Mother and struggles with the issue of motherhood and creativity, although her spiritual battle is political. Sybilla, the Nymphomaniac, is Hetaira (prostitute into priestess and oracle), who reconciles the warring gods within herself. Maria, the Nun, is a spiritual priestess as Sybilla was an earth priestess. She overcomes taboo and the flesh and brings a renewal of the Christian story into the modern day.

Spiegelman had used Jung’s method of inner dialogue and Active Imagination for fourteen years, when one day there was a quantum jump for him, and as he put it:
“The work was no longer merely for my own enlightenment and development, but suddenly took on the possibility of social usefulness.”

Israel Regardie (1907-1985) the western world’s foremost authority on higher consciousness states:
“Spiegelman deals symbolically with the process of individuation, the growth to be ONESELF, the movement Godward.”

The Quest - The Quest, Further Adventures in the Unconscious, is part of the Psycho-Mythology Series, a blend of fiction and psychological fact. Spiegelman had used Jung’s method of inner dialogue and active imagination for fourteen years, when one day there was a quantum jump for him, and as he put it: “The work was no longer merely for my own enlightenment and development, but suddenly took on the possibility of social usefulness.” The first book of the Psycho-Mythology Series is The Tree, which consists of ten tales told by five men and five women. Each story is of a heroic nature, though the people are quite ordinary. Each is a tale of individuation, of a pursuit of wholeness and meaning based on their own experience of the divine. The Quest, which is made up of different stories, dovetail into one tale. Humanity’s search for meaning, and understanding, integration and union carries on. The content is of learning and healing. Through their experiences, they are redeemed and make the discovery of the divinization of man and the humanization of the divine. Click title to order.
